The March European Council reaffirmed the central role of the single market as a driver of European competitiveness, encapsulated in the phrase “one Europe, one market,” presented by President Letta at the informal council in February. Leaders emphasized the need to reduce regulatory fragmentation, strengthen economic integration, and accelerate strategic investments, particularly in sectors critical to economic and industrial security.
Among the main points that emerged is a strong consensus on the priority of regulatory simplification and on strengthening Europe’s industrial base, particularly in light of growing global competitive pressure. The issue of energy remains central, both for its direct effects on competitiveness and for its geopolitical implications. At the same time, discussions continue on economic governance and the financing of common priorities, with positions still diverging among Member States.
