Silver Economy and demographic trends: opportunities and strategies for Europe

Seminar

On 9 December 2025, the seminar Silver Economy and demographic trends: opportunities and strategies for Europe took place at AREL, a meeting dedicated to exploring how population ageing is transforming consumption, work and welfare systems, while opening up new spaces for innovation and development.

Opening and coordinating the discussion was Claudio Lucifora (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), who led an articulate and highly participative discussion on the challenges and opportunities that the growing ‘silver’ population represents for European competitiveness.

Speakers included Andrea Alemanno (IPSOS), who illustrated the main demographic data and trends; Mariano Bella (Confcommercio), with an analysis of the economic impact and new consumption patterns; Elena Bonetti (Chamber of Deputies), who explored the role of public policies; and Cosimo Pacciani (Poste Italiane), who spoke on the subject of innovation in services dedicated to the population. The conclusions were entrusted to Tiziano Treu (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), who summarised the contributions that had emerged, emphasising the need to transform the demographic transition into a strategic lever for European growth.
